What happens when car company goes out of business?

What happens when a car company goes out of business? I suppose it's dependent on the reason.
1. What happened to Plymouth and Oldsmobile warranties when the brand was discontinued? Did they go to certain Chrysler or GM dealers or did all dealers honor the warranty?
2. How about Daihatsu, Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Yugo in the U.S.?

3. For Rover in the UK, it looks bad. See above article. It looks like owners are on their own. Would you buy a Rover for a cheap price if you were in the UK?
On a different Rover topic, I heard they converted the front wheel drive Rover 75 design (mid-size for the US, large for the UK) to a rear wheel drive designed Rover 75 Limo. I didn't know that one could use a front wheel design for a rear wheel drive car.
