I can't think of an American equivalent for Rover, but when some of these others companies folded, or left the US market, re-sale prices dropped, and a few enterprising individuals bought the cars up (someone in my town has a stack of Yugos). A friend and I hoarded Opels for a while back in the early 80's. I think he's still got about a dozen GTs.
I read where Alfa's getting ready to make a go at the North American market again.
Was the Rover designed for an AWD system?
