My wife has a '99 Z3 2.3 to go with my '99 9-3. They make a nice combination. The Z is great fun to drive in the twisties, and is not a bad riding car otherwise, but we've never taken a trip longer than a couple hundred miles in it. The trunk holds two carryon sized suitcases, so one could do it. In fact, there's a national gathering of Z3 (and now Z4) owners at the factory every fall.
Check which engine is in the M. S52s are solid. There have been numerous failures on S54s due to engine clearance. Also, Z3s (and especially MZ3s) can develop cracks in the trunk subfloor where the suspension mounts, and around the point where the differential mounts. Check this one out.
The M won't handle as nicely as the S2000 but will have gobs more torque. Either of those are more tossable than a 350Z. If you're 6'1" I doubt the Miata is for you. I'm just under 6' and I sat in one before my wife bought the Z. Windshield header was just at eye level, and my head poked up the roof with the top up.
What about a Mini convertible?
