a used Porsche Boxster? You can get those for under $30K and have an awful lot of fun, plus they are more unique that the BMW.
As for the Miata, they are wonderful, but like most small Japanese cars, they are not made to fit tall Americans. I'm 6'2" and about 4-5" too tall to be comfortable. Think of it a sport jacket size: I'm a 44 long, and a Miata is a 38 short.
You might also look at a Mitsubishi Eclipse. I've driven the V6 model and it goes very nicely. With some big wheels and tires, firmer shocks, and maybe a hotter chip it would be a great choice for fairly short money. Lots of aftermarket goodies, too.
