We have an '04 XC70 that is my wife's daily driver. We really love the car, so much that when I replace my Viggen, I may look at a Volvo (V50R???). This is absolutely the best long distance car I have driven. If it were my choice, I would have gone for the V70R, but my wife leaves before 6AM for work, often before the plows come (we live in Massachusetts). Also, the XC70's cargo space gets used for taking the family on hikes (two toddlers and a dog), for ski trips and for long weekends with lots of kid gear. It does have lean in the corners, but feels secure and predictable; you can drive fast in the corners. Power is good also, more torque than hp.
The only other car we considered was the Sube Outback XT (sound familar?). We loved the power, handling and steering of the Sube. The interior is also much improved since the previous generation. The only downfalls were the lack of people and cargo space compared to the Volvo and the gas mileage.
Hope that helps.
