As other have mentioned, the very first 960 straight six engine had some issues with the aluminum block where it was porous and could start leaking oil or water right out the side of the block.
I would think that all those engines are gone by now and it might be a newer one installed in this car.
Otherwise the 6 cyl is bullet proof just like the 5 cyl in the 850.
The timing belt on early 93 and older 960 is on a 30K interval, why I don't really know since the same belt goes 50K on the early 850.
They did have some issues with the exhaust cam shaft sprocket and installed a vibration damper device inside the sprocket from 93 and up.
Transmission is very strong mechanically but can be destroyed by faulty electrical issues like a bad gear selector switch or mode selector switch that is being allowed to run the transmission in limp home mode too much.
The same goes for all modern cars. When transmission is in limp home mode it puts a lot of strain on the clutches and transmission fluid and the trans will "burn up" if going on for too long.
Limp home is only there to take you home or to the repair shop, not to keep driving the car on a daily basis.
As always, make sure to have the car checked out by a Volvo mechanic before you buy it. A 13 year old car can always have hidden things.
