I'm always shopping used. The A4 is typically similar in price (or more) to an equivalent year 9-5 but MUCH smaller - unusable back seat, and less space inside. The A6 is more equivalent in size but typically more $. The Quattro AWD is heavy and adds to cost up front, and for gas (I have no idea of the maintenance requirement). It's tough to find a 2wd Audi around here. (We only have snow 7 months of the year, so AWD isn't a priority for me).
Performance is poorer than 9-5 unless you go with larger engines. Audi interiors are the best you can imagine, but tight. I get the impression looking under the Audi hood that you could drop a dime anywhere and it wouldn't reach the ground, but the 9-5 (4cyl) has plenty of space for DIY. Lots of performance options available for both.
