I drive the current model Outback wagon with a turbo (which was rated less MPG than Subaru's "standard" 2.5i engine) ... I typically get 24-25 MPG with 75% highway/25% city. Some days I achieve higher on the freeway. Point in case, on my 17 mile commute this morning the car's trip computer read 28.2 MPG (reset before leaving home). This was attained going between 60-70 MPH for 90% of the drive, the rest was inner city. If it means anything, this vehicle is a manual 5-speed.
Our 1998 Forester automatic with 165,000 miles is still getting around the 20MPG mark with 50/50 highway/city driving.
Driving the Outback in only city driving, my numbers fall a bit, anywhere from 18-20. These cars definitely achieve more impressive highway numbers, but it's not a "crock" to say the Outback can't get 28 MPG on the highway. If my 2.5XT can, a 2.5i surely can (which I'm sure is what is advertised in their commercial). Even mid 20's, IMO, is very good for an AWD wagon.
I know SAAB's 4 cylinder turbo achieves great numbers, but I owned the V6 9-5 which did roughly the same as my Subaru, so needless to say I'm quite happy with the numbers I'm pulling.
Cheers,
buddy
