Picking an SUV/AWD car for my Aunt (long)

My Aunt's getting ready to retire and is a HUGE fan winter sports including X-country skiing and snowshoeing. She's looking for an AWD vehicle with "reasonable" gas milage, plenty of cargo room, and a nice interior (good seats are absolutely vital). The current leaders are:
BMW X3
Subaru B9
With a slight edge to the BMW because they have nicer interiors (and I'd imagine better seats). We've more or less ruled out the following, mostly because of size, price or bad reputation:
A4/A6 Avant Quattro
Volvo XC70
All the car based Subies
She feels that she "needs" a lot of room, and isn't really in a position to deal with a roof storage system. She's also coming off a decade with a minivan so the A4 would be a really tough sell (even though I think it'd be right car for her 90% of the time). So I'm looking for suggestions, nice premium AWD cars/SUVs I may have overlooked. I'll perfectly admit my own European bias, so if there's a nice Asian option in that $30-35k range I'd love to know more about it.
Thanks in advance and I'll probably be passing the replies on to her via email.
