We have a 93 940 wagon, the ugly duckling in our house. My three SAAB 9k's and two 5 series alway get attention. The 940, never. But it never complained. Just keeps on ticking.
This is not a performance car you are talking about so you should not have such expectations. Don't expect it to have the pickup of a 9k turbo. Although a 940 turbo may be different but I don't think it gets close to 200HP. There are a number of features I like about the car none of which are related to the cargo room which you know already.
It is a non-interference engine with a timing belt. The belt should be replaced every 60k miles. If you forget, like I do, no problem. It will just not start as a protest until you find out why and replce it. There won't be any damage to the engine.
More than one times my wife and daughter ran it with insufficient coolant. No problem. I found out later. Added coolant. Fixed the slow leak. There's never a complaint. It just ran.
One winter my daughter complained she has been driving to the high school for a few weeks without heat. But the car functions well mechanically. Turned out the thermostat was broken and stuck open, resulting in the engine running very cool. I replaced the thermostat. Again no problem.
I flush the ATF every 20,000 miles. Other than that I don't recall doing anything to it except a regular oil change of mobile 1 every 10,000 miles.
On the other hand you don't want to know the amount of time I spend on my SAAB's and two 5 series. You may ask why I don't get more of them? What'll I do with my spare time?
