You won't be disappointed. You have been through the 240 wagon. The 940 fixed most problems the 240 has and keeps the good things intact, IMO. The 2.3L engine doesn't have the pep of the SAAB turbo counterpart but it is no slouch when it gets up to speed.
The improvement I found on the 940 as compared to the 240:
1.) The stick type fuse on the 240. Gone. Replaced with blade type. You won't have the stick type fuse having bad contact because of the connection coming loose.
2.) The flimsy center console between the front seats on the 240. This I don't know. All of our 240 wagons suffered the broken center console because the kids stepped on it to move from the backseats to the front. It could not take the weight of even a child's foot. By the time we got our 940, the kids have grown up and don't do that anymore. So the center console of our 940 is still intact.
3.) The third brake light going out syndrome on the 240 rear gate is no more. The 940 has improved the wiring loom going through the rear gate. No wires will be broken due to age like the 240 wagon.
4.) The 940 has far superior rust protection. My 940 wagon doesn't have any rust yet.
5.) The engine mount is far, far duable. I haven't replaced the 940 engine mount. Where on every 240 wagon I owned the engine mount has all been replaced at least once. Some more than once.
You'll still find a cavernous engine compartment like the 240 where everything is easy to get to. Because the engine is the same I think. The only drawback is you cannot find a 5 speed. Because the 5 speed was not sold in the US. But I found if I flush the ATF every 20k miles, the auto transmission is very durable. Or I am just lucky?
