Electrical issues have not plagued Audis for at least 15 years. Yes, indeed, prior to the very early 90s, they did have a lot of electrical problems. No more. The later Audis I've owned have never had any electrical problems. I don't know of the 'nightmares' you speak of. Please ellaborate.

Pathetic gas mileage? They're no worse than any other V6.

Look at the materials, the paint finishes, the quality of the trim and the panel fit. Audis are truly first-rate in all of these respects. They are certainly FAR better than Mercedes and appreciably better than BMW. BMW and Merc don't even turn under and finish the sheet metal inside the engine compartments anymore.

Now, of course, I'm not here to bash Saabs. It would be entirely hypocritical of me to do so given that my family and I have owned so many of them (and still do). However, the good gentleman who started this inquiry has asked for candid opinions and, frankly, many of the ones given here appear not to have been given by first-hand owners or by people who see a lot of them. Had they been, they would have been far more consistant with real-world experiences instead of rumors.

Indeed, anyone interested in any car, regardless of make, should do a thorough investigation of the reliability histories of their choices and look at them with a clear view that isn't tainted by pride or prejudice. As with all cars, buy the best example you can afford and if at all possible, obtain its maintenance history. Then, if you're not inclined to work on it yourself, seek out a worthy professional. I've had better luck finding an independent repair facility for my Audis than I have for my Saabs.

Of course, pick what you LIKE. Every car has a weakness. Every car will break, but, especially between Audi and Saab, the ownership experiences will be strikingly similar as far as costs and the attention they need. They're both very good cars and are both a good choice.
