what colour smoke? if plugs are turning black, its... Posted by baggsly [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Piston rings...., hwood, Tue, 7 Nov 2006 17:51:25 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
either oil fouling (wet black) or very rich (dry sooty black). if it's running rich you'll be smelling gas as well as having a black tailpipe. if you've got the 3 su setup, it may be one carb is misadjusted and putting more gas into cylinder. of course, that would only show on the plugs fed by that carb.
if the rings were seized, i don't think it would be running, as the rings are usually stuck in place in the bore. they might be stuck to the piston if it is running, but if that's the case you will prolly find your crankcase oil diluted by gasoline washing down cylinder walls.
if the rings are stuck in the bore, you might try squirting some oil in the cylinder and letting it sit for awhile, then crank with no spark and no plugs to see if you can loosen them. if they're stuck to the pistons, i think you'll have to remove the pistons but i'm not sure about that. one danger you may face is if the rings break, you may end up scoring the bore and then it's a much bigger deal.
as a last resort you might try something like pb blaster, but i don't know how volatile that stuff would be, or what other damage it might cause to the engine. at the very least, if you use something like that, i'd change the oil immediately afterwards as well as putting more oil in the cylinders to lube them.
just a couple of ideas, good luck with it. the xk engine is a sweetie, and the 140 is a beautiful car as well.
mark :-)
