Subaru Forester?
Seriously, those vehicles you mentioned are all pretty darned big! 4Runners and Pathfinders used to be reasonably sized, but the current models are absolutely enormous. Parked next to my '84 3/4 ton Suburban my friend's 4Runner is scary big - not as long, but easily as tall and quite possibly wider.
The Xterra is a pretty compact vehicle, but keep in mind it's very truck-like - it's in no way a cute-ute like many of the vehicles in its size class. I'm not sure it's daily-driver material for a family.
I've not looked carefully at the Toureg nor the Commander, but I'm betting0 the VW is closer in size to the 4Runner & Pathfinder than an Xterra, and the Commander can't be small, either, seeing as it's a full-size SUV with 3rd row seating...
If you are shortly becoming a family of three, I can only imagine a Forester would do you quite well compared to all of this competition. Safer, more economical, and every bit at utilitarian. If you're not dead-set on CPO, you might look at the new CRVs and RAV4s as well - they're bigger than they used to be, and again, a good match for a new family. Or, what about something like a used Audi Allroad?
