get a minivan or cross-over not a truck.
All the truck-based SUVs are a pain for car seats and kids have to really climb into the truck once they are walking (it's really not far away). Or Mom gets to hoist them, which gets old fast. The big doors in a minivan make getting in and out easy. Plus minivans drive a whole lot better.
What you don't realize yet is that you'll have the vehicle as your kiddo gets older --4-5 years, maybe longer-- and a van is MUCH friendlier for the horde of friends who soon will be coming along for the ride, on play dates, to parties, etc. SUVs, except big ones, just don't hold as much.
Also, read the crash ratings. Truck-based SUVs don't do as well in many types of crashes. With your wife and kid on board, get something that can really take a hit.
If we were still in that phase, I'd get an Odyssey or Sienna, or go to a crossover like the Mazda CX9.
