Others have mentioned some LR forums.. so I'll skip that. I totally agree that the Land Rover has some serious appeal. I've always wanted one too.. and my work can justify having a big vehicle. Lower down I already made my point about hybrids, so I'll spare you more nagging about that (especially since I don't have one- hyporcrite, right?), but for the Disco, several things to consider are the vastness of the vehicle vs the skimpy rear seat room. One gal friend has one which her hubby got for their new kid situation and the car seat hardly fits. The rear door is side opening and heavy. Also, it's incredibly slow, despite the V8 (which has 1950's Buick roots). The inherient SUV vices like 188 hp and $75/fill-ups are there in spades so I'll put a lid on it in that category.
Even with the consistant bias against them, I think you've totally done your research and the wife keeps coming back wanting a truck. Hey, I shop for a living, so I understand wanting and the process of justification as validation for something like a ride with the w-o-r-s-t of all reliability ratings and still not backing down with curiosity. You are mega-smart for really looking, digging high and low for information. That's super cool.
However, maybe if you haven't done so, you should have your wife do some of her own research. That might get you out of the uncomfortable position of having to come back to her and have to give her all the bad news. It might also help her 'get' what she wants by reading epinions.com reviews or Consumer Reports.
One last nugget. I sense that she, like so many of us Saab people -she dosen't really want some souless, 'practical', obvious car. She's about to be a mom and wants a shred of coolness.. thus her Land Rover/Toureg/etc interest. Maybe there's some prestiege craving? It's a real, understandible craving. Have you two considered a BMW wagon (we now have a used, 2002 325it and it's been brilliant) or even a BMW X3? The BMWs have very solid engineering, cache, decent reliablity, top safety, good dealer service if you get one with certification and being wagons, they depreciate significantly.
Best of luck deciding. You're a gem for doing all this research.
