Toyota TV ads are saying how they have several cars that get over 30 mpg highway and ads for small SUVs that screech about 24 mpg highway, as if such mileage is some miracle.
Anyway, if someone is coming out of a car that gets 14 mpg in traffic and maybe 20 on the highway, the figures for the Fit/Scion/Smart seem like an amazing deal. But if you already drive a car that gets decent mileage, the micro cars are really only about 10-15% better, and you give up a lot to gain very little. For instance, if I drive gently, I can crack 25 mpg in my 9000 in local (semi-rural) driving and get over 30 highway. My wife's 9-5 does even better. Both are a lot better to drive than some dinky econobox, handle long trips with comfort and style, and either can pull a trailer with the two 1000+ pound loads of bark mulch I hauled this past weekend. Try that in a Prius/Smart/Fit, etc.
IMHO, you buy a car for a lot more than commuting. Don't get misled by the mileage number in advertising. Gas is only one cost of car ownership. BTW, your highway mileage is about normal, but your city mileage numbers for that many stop lights seem high--be sure to reset the SID so it doesn't reflect the highway miles.
