Well I'll second your opinion. As you noted, ask a MB board about a Saab and you'll likely get similar responses to the one's you got here: expensive, difficult to maintain, etc. I think the key is knowing what you are getting into, this thing may be cheap to acquire but it will not be cheap to operate. As long as you are aware and comfortable with that I'm sure you'd enjoy the car. It's not going to be as easy (cheap) to operate as a Honda but it's not going to drive like one either.
My Passat W8 is a similar situation: VW prices to acquire, Audi prices to operate. I went in knowing this and am reminded of it every time it goes in for service but I truly love the car. It's unique and very rewarding to drive. Yeah, I could have got the 4- or 6-cylinder and saved a bunch of money both in the purchase and service costs but I wanted something a bit different. And I'm glad I did.
I think I would spend a lot of time reading a MB board to see what the weakness of the car are. Get a feel for the amount of money you'll likely be spending a year on maintenance. The more informed decision you make the happier you'll be. I think this is one of the problems that many people make when they shop for another car. If they are coming from a Honda and think that because they are spending more for a car (say moving into a Saab) they think it's going to be _that_ much better. Unfortunately, they simply don't do enough research to realize that more money does not always mean more reliability.
