I am planning on replacing my Solstice with some sort of beefed up econobox in the next few months, been looking mainly at:

o Hyundai Veloster Turbo
o Fiat 500 Abarth
o VW GTI
o Focus ST

I was prepared to be driving one of these cars right now, but then I caught wind that ChryCo has a Dart SRT4 in the works and I put my purchase on hold. :)

I've been keeping up with Focus ST news as it comes out, and I think my biggest disappointment is that they traded in the finesse of the Focus SVT (which was amazing) for more muscle, and as we all know that doesn't always mesh well with FWD. What I've read - and strikes me as likely - is that in order to make the ST fast they added a bunch of gizmos to manage the fact that it's FWD, and the result is that while it is quick around a track it doesn't feel as direct/balanced as it could (and the SVT did). I think that's too bad, but it certainly wouldn't stop me from buying one. :) If I *truly* cared about poise, I wouldn't be shopping FWD in the first place.

That said, I spent a little while in a new Focus hatch with a manual, and the car was a real pleasure to operate overall. Everything about it was very thoughtful and well put together. My only complaint is that the interior is LITTERED with tiny buttons, and at night it looks like a damn starfield. Not unlike an early 9-3SS, actually. I could probably learn to live with it, but at present it's the biggest reason for me not to buy one.

As much as I'm itching to buy something, I am committed to waiting for the SRT, or news that there won't be one. In the meantime, I'm hoping the Focus will get an interior makeover (it's about due) and the Veloster will get a suspension makeover... and then my decision will be *really* difficult. ;)
