The MINI just doesn't quite hit all the marks as solidly as I'd like it to. While there's no denying it's super fun to drive - at least my friend's '05 supercharged one is - I don't think it really brings a great intersection of fuel economy, performance, size, reliability, and cost to the table. The Fiat size at Focus price is just really hard to wrap my brain around. If parking was a concern for me I'd probably drop the Focus or GTI and put MINI on the list, but it's not, so I don't. ;)
Ironically, not that long ago I was pretty dead-set on a slightly used '07+ Cooper S, but then I drove a 500 (weeklong rental) and a Veloster (test drive) and started thinking "with just a little more power...." and that got me off the Cooper. The dynamics of the 500 in town are just fantastic (IMHO) and the Veloster is highly UNpolished but dirt cheap. With turbo power in each of them, they became very attractive. The ST, well, the Focus SVT was so amazing to drive I couldn't possibly ignore the followup. And, really, in 2012 is there anything more Viggen like that a mid-size hatchback pushed to its limits with boost? Not likely! ;)
That said, I wasn't joking about the Dodge Dart. I love that they revived this nameplate, and the regular ol' Darts are smart looking in and out. If the SRT lives up to rumors (a 300hp 2.4l Tigershark, like the Caliber SRT) and AWD it'd be hard to turn it down. I mean, look at this thing! (Be aware, I realize the insanity of drooling over American styling on Italian mechanicals, but whatever!)
