Generally its okay, but things like significantly larger IC's can cause lean conditions that can fall outside of the range of the ecu's ability to adapt. Also injectors that offer more than a 10% increase in fuel delivary are typically outside the range of the ecu's ability to adapt, resulting in overally rich conditions which can be just as harmful.
Before I got my 9-2x tuned I had switched to a larger IC, larger exhaust, and replaced three factory cats, with one single metal core high flow race cat. I did a roughly 16% increase in wheel hp on the dyno, but there were also some knock events that caused the car to pull the power way back, basically power was better, but inconsistant. After tuning I saw a roughly 40% increase in wheel hp on the dyno and the knocking was gone. The 9-2x uses a very adaptive learning ecu, similair to T7 in function.
