There's been a bunch of legitimate research done on this exact topic for both charged-air and NA SI applications. Jak, you run an Innovate A/F unit right? Here's an article from them specifically talking-about A/F in turbo applications.

"Richening up the mixture results in a slower burn, moving the pressure peak later where there is more leverage, hence more torque. Also the pressure peak is lower at a later crank angle and the knock probability is reduced. The same effect can be achieved with an optimum power mixture and more ignition retard."
"Most engines produce maximum power (with optimized ignition timing) at an air-fuel-ratio between 12 and 13. Let's assume the optimum is in the middle at 12.5."
You can run richer certainly, but why waste the fuel, make more pollution, not pass emissions, and make less power...especially considering that T-7 is pretty darn good at maintaining the ratio that you tell it to maintain?
I don't know for sure how things are over in Blackmountain, but I have to hook my car up to a tail pipe sniffer once a year too.
