Depends on what you mean by build up though - I have an 83 900T that I bought for $100 sight unseen a couple of years ago. Starting last winter, I replaced the old cracked head, put in all new motor mounts and suspension bushings, installed an MSD BTM, removed the AC and fixed the heated seats (ok, not performance, but still nice).
As soon as I land a job, I'm going to get some oil lines made up and go for the 16V intercooler install, have a 3" straight thru exhaust made up, probably put on a spring/shock/tire deal and leave it at that. (maybe some decent speakers to go with my head unit) I cant see myself dropping big coin on custom interiors, wild paint, monster audio or any of that stuff.
I like the fact that I have an 8V - its old and unusual. That said - the fact that we have heads that crack, warp and don't have the best chamber shape limits us a bit. Although I relish reading the progress that people like GM, Jak, Vince Tong, Eric van Spelde etc make in pushing the envelope in 900s, I'll never be a participant in the latest "which (turbo, engine management system, intercooler, chip,) is the best" debate - I'm pretty happy living in the realm of 'old Saab, modestly modified' ;)
