I don't consider myself an "expert", but I believe the Saab engine management system will detect knock and increase fuel, reduce ignition advance, and - ultimately - open the wastegate and dump boost.
If you go with an aftermarket boost controller, you will be disconnecting the wastegate operation from the T5 unit. The ECU (T5) will cut back ignition advance as much as it can, but the signal to open the wastegate will now go no-where.
So imagine yourself rocketing up that long mountain grade, pushing a steady 18-20 PSI. For whatever reason, the gas is bad and you start to detonate (knock). Maybe you could hear the pinging but you don't 'cus your cranking Deep Purple "Highway Star". By the top of the hill, the car is running really crappy because you just burned holes through your pistons.
You will still have "knock detection", but the T5 will no longer be able to dump boost. This will severely limit T5 protection.
Just my thoughts,
Ludwig
