In a previous post here on the "performance" bullentin board, I noted how I installed a stage 2 SPEC clutch pressure plate with a Sachs clutch disc. The initial install gave me poor results.

Before I share why the initial install gave me poor results, I feel the need to get defensive. When installing the clutch last weekend, I needed to get the job done. The car came into my industrial unit and needed to get out the same day. Thus, I somewhat rushed the job. The mindset during the job last weekend was.... "get it done!". By doing so I made a mistake. I should of never set up the SPEC stage 2 pressure plate with the Sachs factory disc. The design of SPEC stage 2 pressure plate is diffent from that of the Sachs because the friction area of the SPEC kevlar disc is slightly thicker then the frictional area of the factory Sachs' disc. Thus, the design of the SPEC stage 2 pressure plate is different as well. Last weekend my clutch slipped because the SPEC pressure plate was not properly clampiing down on the Sachs clutch disc. Heck.... knowing what I know now... I am surprised that it held at all!

Yesterday a buddy and I finished the install of the SPEC stage2 pressure plate WITH the SPEC kevlar disc that came with my kit. Long story short - I LIKE THIS CLUTCH!! Admittedly I have only be driving the car a day - but immediately after the clutch job was done I could feel how this clutch was different. The clutch is very responsive and doesn't shudder. The clutch engages just off the floor and this is a treat (in my opinion) when the car is moving and shifting through the gears. As for pedal feel - the pedal is light. I would equate the pedal feel to that of my factory clutch in my 1992 C900 turbo.

I believe the SPEC clutch turned out good because of the following things that were done:

1) The clutch line was upgraded to handle the SPEC stage 2 pressure plate (btw - thank you WINDER for that tip!)
2) The flywheel was resurfaced by a local machine shop
3) I cleaned both the flywheel and the pressure plate off with brake cleaner seconds before slapping the clutch together
4) Time was taken to analyze and address the problems of last week

Hopefully the above can help someone else decide on a clutch for their Saab when the time comes.

I'll keep the board posted with regards to the long term result of my SPEC stage 2 clutch kit.
