There is no such thing as "supposed to go" when it comes to the.. Posted by Karl [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Normal Boost on '96 9k AERO, Rob ![]() |
...in-dash boost gauge. It's a relative thing and varies to some extent between cars. My 97 Aero for instance boosts to the end of red in stock form. With my reprogrammed ECU, @ 22 PSI it boosts all the way to 15.00 hours...
If you feel uncertain about the performance of your Aero, you need to hook up a "real" calibrated boost gauge to get some real figures.
You should expect to see 15,6 PSI max boost (1,08 bar) which will then taper off towards 0,68 bar as you approach 5500 rpm.
There are many things which affect boost of these magnificent machines:
1) Plugs (usually need to be changed more often than service manual prescribes...) NGK BCPR7-ES11, gapped at 0,9-1,0 mm.
2) Fuel (get the best grade available in your area, except in the winter if it's cold)
3) BCP
4) Bypass valve/hooter valve
5) Hoses
Also, if you've switched fuel grades, do an adaptation run. Full throttle in 4th or 5th gear, preferrably uphill and with some load in the car. Do a run from 2000-4000 rpm. Repeat a few times. This'll set your boost where it's supposed to be...
