A friend is going through this right now with his 85. We pulled the injector/sensor portion of a harness from an '89 and he's going to graft it in, wire for wire, at the righthand side fender, near where the harness goes into the car to the ECU. The existing wiring there is still in decent shape, and the only mods we'll need to make are to the AMM pin order, the AIC plug will need to be retro'd to a LH2.2 plug, and maybe the Hall sensor wiring -- can't recall if that was part of the harness or not. (Of course, none of these additional changes are necessary with an LH2.2 harness).
The fan wiring is completely shot, too. But, as with the injector harness, we've found protected portions of the existing wiring that are still pliable and uncracked. He grafted in fresh wiring there.
As for APC stuff: it's basically stand-alone and you do not have to absolutely wire it in the same way it came from the factory (lots of Volvo guys put them on 200 and 700 series cars). The benefit of the 86+ APC is that there are a lot of them available.
As for an 86 harness: I was in the pull-a-part recently, mucking through an 86 Turbo: it had some bad wiring (at the fans). So maybe if you have access to an 86 make sure the wiring is sound.
As for doing a complete and total swap: good luck. :-) I've not done it and don't wish to, as you need to rip out the dash. It's for the patient. Besides, any wiring that was not exposed to underhood heat should be in decent shape.
