Thanks Jak, re: vac adv mod- how about adding a spring Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Thu, 21 Dec 2006 07:40:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Repeated from below -- the thread is getting pretty far down the page;
I think I've read every post related to this topic. Seems like the adjustable mod is the way to go and I've been playing with my spare diaphragm, boost gauge, and pump (sitting on the couch in the living room, not in the car). Kevin K notes that the retard comes on too strong (more or less all at once at 1-3psi) and creates a significant flat spot just as the turbo begins to spool. In my test on the couch, my diaphragm seems to open at 2-3 psi, about where he said it would, and yes, it opens fairly quickly (not really linear at all).
It seems like there is enough room in the hole in the wall of the distributor to run a small spring from the base of the capsule, parallel to the lever, that would make this more gradual and cause the retard to occur at a higher level, like 5-6 psi (or where would you target the transition?) This would keep the timing relatively advanced at low boost, assist in the spool-up, and minimize the lag Kevin notes. Seems like it would also "stretch out" the pressure over which the retrad is applied.
Does this make sense? Also, how strong a spring would I be searching for- maybe something like the spring from a retractable ball point pen?
