The first head that I redid made lots of noise for a while after starting with no oil in the lifters, untill they prime themselves. Bentley advises that when installing new lifters it can take up to 30 mins of idle time for the noise to go completely away. Just unhook the injectors and the ignition amplifier and crank the car over and watch your oil pressure gauge and idiot light, you will know right away if there is oil pressure or not.
You are exactly right about the chain not having to line up correctly, the TDC marks on the flywheel and cams just have to line up. Cams line up every other rotation.
If you are really nervous about the lifters, what I did the second time around was to prime the lifters by hand before I put them back in the head, now you would have to pull the cams back out and I would understand reluctance to do this, but the oil is fed into the lifters through a little hole in the oil groove on the side of the lifter. You can pull the lifters out and get a syringe with oil in it and fill them up yourself, and put them back in the head pre-primed with oil, makes for very little if any noise. I used an oil can with a sports ball air needle pressed to the end because I was working late at night and couldn't really track down a syringe, same thing though.
Best,
Drew
