what happened in my case is a long story, but basically, like you after about 2-3 years of work. ditto your whole story, almost exactly. except a few rookie mistakes on my end. too many details to type. come to carlisle and ill tell you the whole story. all in all worked out good because i learned a ton in the process and the shop who machined my head was willing to do it again, and we did what we should have done the first time and thats putting in late model 9-3 intake valves which opens up the intake side just right.
you'll get it right, take you're time and assume nothing. i decided to take the cylinder head off when possibilities started running thin. it was good to do, even though i had to buy another head gasket. don't overlook the tensioner. if it looks abused replace it, even if it seems like it is working right by hand.
