Great point Kevin, the driver makes or breaks the deal in many cases. There are limits to what a driver can do and with long straights and the like, huge hp would have to play a bigger role. Auto-cross vs. road course vs drag strip vs long open stretches of an open course.
In a tight auto-cross huge hp is of little use. Road course with many tight turns and minimal straights, huge hp still has little use and the driver can make a huge difference. Huge road course with long straights, well then if you double the hp it can make a much bigger difference. No question the driver is one of the biggest parts of the equation, but after the driver comes the type of track and how the car is set-up.
A 450hp saab on a long road course would fair better than a 250hp car, but turn that around and that same 450hp saab might have little to no advantage over the 250hp saab in a tight twisty road course with minimal staights.... Each course has a set-up that will work best and its a compromise between cornering, braking, traction and straightaway speed.
