97 9K Aero 5spd. modifications Posted by jdlincoln [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Hi Folks,
I am so thankful for this board. You all have helped this 57 yr. old ex-gearhead lot's since I subscribed last summer. I need some more advise/input.
Our 1997 Aero has 93,000 miles. Never had any performance modifications untill last spring. (06) Suspension and brakes are still stone stock with the exception of poly rear wishbone bushings. Since June '06 I have added:
1. Swedish Dynamics 2.5" cat back stainless exaust (fit perfect)
2.Open K&N air filter
3. Took it to Automotion and had Frank do a Stage 2 ECU tune.
3a. Went to the SOC '06-Drno showed 211HP and 279 torque.
Fast forward to this spring, don't drive it in winter and garage has no heat.
4.Ordered a 3" stainless DP and bar and plate intercooler from Jak, installed them last week. (time constraints, not retired, still have to work to afford toys)
5. Having some rear O2 sensor issues but will figure that out, other than that the car runs great, and am looking forward to having either Frank or Jak boost it up to stage 4.
What I am experiencing now, is that as the HP and Torque increase, the handling and controlability of the veichle has decreased. (DUH) I've checked the lower motor mounts, trans. mount and front swaybar bushings and all but the RR motor mount seem to need replacing.
What I have in mind, after reviewing many posts to this and the 9000 board, is to renew the front MM with stock and add a "limiter" of sorts, do urethane transmission and either urethane F&R sway bar bushings, or MP's 1" F%R swaybar upgrade.
I do not want the car to vibrate much more (there is none now), and I do want to improve the handling, especially under power and on our horrible northern Vt. 2 lane roads. I DO want to retain the GT or quiet touring (interstate long trips) ability of the car.
I am fortunate to have a '97 CSE for my work car, so suspension goodies like the Aero's 19mm swaybars can be handed down. Brakes also, but that's another issue
As always, I appreciate any and all feedback!
Thanks,
John
