Thanks for the backhanded compliment Dave! Maybe "crazy" was the best word. We've actually made a ton of progress in the last few months and it's very much a world-wide effort at this point.
I'm most involved with Trionic-7 but we're making progress on all the Saab management software including T-5 and LH 2.2, 2.4, and even Megasquirt. Most recently for T-7, a couple of guys from Finland and Russia have written some really nice little programs that automatically fix the checksum security after moding a file--so that big hurdle has been crossed. The work I had done actually disabled the security checksums, but their program and approach is much better than what I was working-on, and actually mathematically fixes the file the right way; it's really a nice piece of software.
To tune your own files without comparing stock files to those sold by current companies (and essentially guessing what you're changing) you really need to be able to reverse-compile the machine code into a higher level programming language, otherwise a person could never find single point calibration address locations (like rev limit and injecter calibrations) without looking at the work of others. Part of doing that is figuring-out what the "tables" mean, so in the past few weeks I've been concentrating efforts on some packed data series to extract the names and scaling information from the machine code. It's really an exciting time in T-7 engine management! So far I've discovered a repeatable mathematical relationship for unpacking that data and I'm working to calculate a full extracted version. We're also working-on developing a low cost user friendly interface that allows easier communication between a PC and the ECU than current methods.
So yeah, Dave's correct that a non-crazy person probably won't want to do it right now, but there's a bunch of really capable ECU tuning software packages that are free for other vehicle types, and we're working to gather enough knowledge to leverage those packages and coordinate T-7 with them.
There are some hurdles remaining, but T-7 is no different than any other engine management system except that General Motors has never officially licensed/sold the information beyond the checksum calculation (as far as I know anyway, somebody correct me if I'm wrong). There are literally thousands of high school kids tuning their own Hondas these days and T-7 is not much different than that technically. The difference is the availability of fully developed user interface tools and the general knowledge gap and mystique for Trionic in the Saab community.
Dave let me know when you pick-up your new Monster Viggen from Taliaferro. I really want to ride in that beast!
