other than being environmentally irresponsible...<tsk tsk> Posted by bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Guys With No Cat, Have Some Questions..., Luke, Sat, 12 May 2001 13:05:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
the turbo does a remarkable job of attenuating exhaust noise. I would imagine ( I have to, since I spent the money on a high flow 3" catalyst) that even a straight thru 3" would be quieter than a lot of the rice grinders with the 5" coffee can exhaust.
All i'm running is a little Dynomax out towards the end, no resonator. The car has a mild tone at idle, and just normal driving produces a pleasing tone. Freeway cruising and it's drowned out by wind noise. The only time it's noticeable is when it's being stomped on.
As far as performance, whatever you've learned regarding how exhaust affects low/mid/hi RPM performance, throw it out the window. With a turbo engine, it's all about the flow baby :) Your induction is forced, so tricks like valve overlap and exhaust scavenging really DO go out the window; all you need to worry about it getting the highest flowing exhaust possible.
And, I wish you would rethink removing the cat. Your car has one of the (still) most advanced ignition and engine management systems produced, making lots of efficient power. Then you go out and 'improve' on that by yanking out the catalytic converter? is it really worth the maybe 3 HP improvement?
May a large hole in the ozone form over your house (sort of kidding). You don't have to s***can the cat to get good performance. Something to think about, we're all in this together, I'm hardly a tree hugger, but I'd like to see you include a catalytic converter in your exhaust plans.
