Thanks Dave for your suggestions. Having just checked, there is almost 1 inch of loose travel before you feel hydraulic resistance, so technically its not engaging at the top of the pedal travel.
i think i will take the flywheel out of the suspect list, as you suggest.
i dont think the slave is suspect either, as a weak slave would result in engagement lower down in the travel.
ive got a solid Damien Shulock front engine mount, and put in a newer pass side mount, so hopefully have ruled that aspect out.
i'm going to experiment with moving the shifter housing to see if that helps.
it feels like there is something hanging up in the tranny, like 2nd gear fork is getting hung up on something, or the synchro is shot and i have to pop the pedal a bit to get the teeth to mesh.
