High octane gas vs low octane gas.....

Can someone out there help me better explain to my family members why their Saab (especially the Aero owners in my family) should be using a high octane gas vs the lower octane gas. My brother-in-law, who is a big fan of "Consumer Reports" info, brought to my attention a report that they did on low vs high octane gas. In short, Consumer Reports basically concluded that there is no mileage benefit to using a higher octane gas nor is there any benefits from a maintenace perspective (i.e. no sludge and carbon build up in the head and on the valves). Hence, my brother-in-law now uses low octane fuel... yes... because he is cheap !!! My father is following in the paths of "cheapness" too.... low octane. My father now drives the 1993 Aero that I use to own. When I owned it, I always used Sunoco 94 and the exhaust never stank. Just the other day, I had to take the 1993 Aero (which is now driven by my father with 87 octane as the regular fuel) for an e-test and man.. did that exhaust stink. It had a sulphur smell to it. Would this be because of the low octane gas being used in the 1993 Aero? And could this be a factor in having poorer e-test results as to when I used to own the car and put 94 octane in it?

Any thought would be appreciated....TIA.
