I bet when consumer reports did the test, they probably didnt use a turbocharged car.

While its true, that its not a maintenance issue, on turbocharged cars, its does effect performance. Turbocharged cars have a much higher dynamic compression ratio than naturally aspirated engines, which makes them much more prone to pre-detonation...exactly what higher octane gas prevents. To compensate for the increased pre-det, Trionic (Saab's engine management computer)is going to lower boost a couple notches and change the ignition timing.

As far as the sulfur smell, its usually a sign of less refined gasolines. It could just be a bad tank. I've even had tanks of premium that had that smell.
