'96 and '97 are interchangeable, as long as the transmissions are the same (I know both your cars are 5 speed). I suspect your SQR Stage 4 is one of the older ones, that was 309 hp, with stock turbo and injectors. There were some reported cases of failure on these, and if you look at a website for any of SQRs vendors, you will see that now Stage 4 has upgraded injectors. Personally, I wouldn't worry about using one of these on one of my cars. You won't get full effect of the software without a 3" downpipe. You could keep the stock catback portion, I don't think that would make much difference. You could plug in the ECU right now, and the software would recognize what hardware you have, and compensate, giving you probably Stage 1 or 2; then you could always add the 3" downpipe later to get the "full" effect.
