I live in Mountain View, so pretty close to the same options. I never considered e85, but there's a 76 in Redwood City that sells 100 octane unleaded race gas. It was $5 a gallon even back when 91 was over $4, I haven't checked the price recently but I'm sure it's gone down further. Once I even filled a whole tank with 100 a few times just to see what difference it made (not much). We'd probably need a custom tune to really take advantage of race gas, or a custom tune AND bigger injectors to really make use of e85. As mentioned, I don't have a commute, so a tank of gas lasts a month or two and the cost doesn't matter as much.
Back to the original question from Iowaero, I forgot to mention that I also used exhaust wrap on everything back to the cat, and insulating wrap on the intake pipe. That's more to prevent heat soak though. If you're getting preignition and timing pulled before the car is even really hot, then those things probably won't help much.
