Keep in mind that accessories (alternator, water pump, power steering pump) are designed to provide full function at low RPM. Your p/s pump has to have full power assist at, say, 1500rpm while you're moving around the parking lot, and your water pump has to provide full circulation while driving around normally at 2000rpm. At some point after that, they keep sucking more engine power but are not doing any more work. Underdrive pulleys are designed to address this a little bit - you sacrifice some low RPM functionality for some high RPM gains, but they can only do so much.
Electrically driven accessories have the potential to really address this, since they use more power for doing more work, but take less power when not doing anything at all. An electric power steering pump could provide substantial gains since it's relatively unusual to request maximum steering boost and maximum engine power at the same time. Seems like a big win to me...
