I'm assuming you're gutting it then? I would put almost as much thought from an "efficiency" standpoint as from a power standpoint. I don't know what your budget is, but there are so many things you can do when it comes to that. I don't think acid-dipping the hatch, doors, and hood is in the scope of probable solutions, but that's an old school trick. Lightweight wheels are a big help. Also high quality tires could possibly allow you to run a less impressive size (185's, 195's...) without sacrificing much in traction (especially in acceleration, because its not going to have a ton of power), and you would have even less rotating mass and theoretically less wind drag. If you're autocrossing a lot, it would be my guess that REALLY lightening your flywheel would only help you (you'll only have to get moving once at the beginning). Lexan windows, at least on some, could be an option. Heater and a/c should be taken out. Not speed related, but definitely inspect your a-arms at the very least, if not reinforcing them. The a-arms on the og's have a history of failure especially under hard use (like auto-xing).
I'm kind of shooting from the hip here, but when you have owned a boat anchor 8v n/a 900 like me, your mind typically wanders to things like this.
