A compression test will definitely tell you if your power loss is due to internal engine wear, but unless the engine was neglected that isn't likely. You should expect to pay a shop two hours labor to perform a compression test, that's usually the basic diagnostic starting rate. However, you can buy or borrow a compression tester for $35 or less and perform the test yourself in about 20 minutes, with the aid of a friend. It's just a matter of removing the spark plugs, installing the tester fitting in place of the spark plugs (one cylinder at a time), pull the fuel pump fuse or relay, and crank the engine with the throttle fully open. Note your readings for each cylinder and pay attention to variance between cylinders. I'm not sure what the exact compression number is for your engine, but you should be able to find that pretty easily; generally, you're looking for about 150psi per cylinder, with no more than 15% variance between any two cylinders.

In the meantime, make sure you are using good quality premium gasoline generally from places like BP, Kwik Trip, or Shell. Get a bottle of Techron fuel system treatment, it works wonders; SeaFoam and Lucas are the two next best products, but don't compare. If your fuel filter hasn't been replaced within 50,000 miles, do that. Check the hose between your Map sensor and throttle body. Make sure you have the proper NGK spark plugs and they are clean and properly gapped, other spark plug brands, regardless of how they perform in other engines, do not perform as well as plain ol' NGK copper plugs in these engines. Also, make sure your boost bypass valve is functioning properly; they have a tendency to fail and allow boost pressure to leak past without showing any signs of failure.
