It sounds like the other posts are describing a 900 model. I don't know if your car has the separate cutoff switch or if overboost is controlled thru the computer as with newer 900. My 87 9000t does have the overboost switch but your newer car might not. THe wastegate setting is purely mechanical. You could rip out the apc and solenoid and get 7 psi boost with the wastegate. The apc taps into the wastagate air supply line to bleed off some supply air so it can't reduce boost. When the apc detects knock it gives the wastegate some or all of its control air so it can reduce boost down (to a minimum of 7 psi). When you shorten the rod you raise the minimum boost that the apc can go down to. If your rod is set to 10 psi the apc will not be able to go down to 7 if knocking occurs. I'm sure someone on here knows exactly what your car has.
