People have screwed with gear ratios... GM's 4-speed rally boxes are proof positive of this. I read about this on a Swedish webpage a couple years ago, and took it to heart when I rebuilt the gearbox in my '86 900S. Since I'd originally planned on throwing a turbo on this car (best laid plans...) I decided to go with slightly taller gearing to get the most out of a high-compression turbo engine. My '86 will now do 62mph in 2nd gear and does 80mph at 3000rpm in 5th. It's damned near perfect gearing as best I can tell - just wish I had a turbo to help out :).
Why did Saab choose the gearing it did? Who the heck knows? My bets are:
1. Limited parts bins to work from
2. Less lag on turbo cars
3. Easier starts on hills and in snow
4. Towing and/or hauling large loads
Fact is, on a bone-stock Saab the gearing works pretty well. It gets you a good mix of acceleration, responsiveness, and speed/rpm. You can do better by mixing parts, but let's keep in mind that not only did Saab have to accomodate a ton of people in a ton of different driving conditions, but they also had to meet (in the U.S., anyway) EPA fuel economy regulations and other government hoops. It's unlikely they had the resources to do a ton of research and fine-tune gearbox options as much as they'd surely have liked to.
I say, experiment away!
