OK, how to fake it :D Posted by bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: plastic welding, check at body shops or, steven, Wed, 30 May 2001 10:29:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
basically just use good ol' Bondo, actually i would shop for a better brand (3M, PPG, DuPont) of body filler, you *may* even find one that is semi-flexible. Or, find the best auto body supply store in town, i THINK there is a flexible parts repair product out there now ( don't quote me, it's been years since i've done this for work :D.
From there, apply and sand according to directions. Usually you can get a pint of lacquer mixed up to match your car color (enamels typically the smallest amount you can mix is a quart, plus then you need hardener, etc.)
You should also be able to find a Preval sprayer, basically a sprayer, they work SLICK if you don't have a compressor, etc. for spot repairs i would go for a Preval before the gun and compressor, lot less hassle.
A couple of things to keep in mind: spraying auto paint that's correctly thinned is a lot different than spraying from a rattle can. it is VERY thin and will run all over the place if you're not careful. your first coat shouldn't be much more than a splatter, give it time to tack up before your second coats. you'll find that after laying down a few light coats, the paint will hold on better, you have to give the paint something to 'hang' onto. after that, color sand and buff, should look like new! hope that helps, unfortunately even the 'quick and dirty' methods of body repair aren't very quick...sure are dirty though :D
