In the spirit of that minivan, what other 'sleepers' have you Posted by bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
run across? you know, the everyday looking grocery getter that starts to wail when the light turns green?
Sleepers I've either seen, helped build, or owned are:
87 Buick Regal w/231 turbo V- these cars look just like Grampa's 'sport' ride, two door complete with vinyls top. They also happen to have the same drivetrain as a Grand National. Slicks and some mild tuning get these cars into mid 13's in the 1/4. At the time they were being produced, they were the quickest American production car.
70 Olds Vista Cruiser - My high school g/f's family car. Could have been the car on 'That 70's Show', dark green complete with wood sides. Also happened to have a hard running 455 that her dad (original owner of the car) had ordered the same as a 4-4-2, huge Quadrajet, 4-spd, and dual exhaust. This car was a 4000 lb. stoplight terror! IF you could get it to hook up, it would launch hard with the 4.11 gears. In hindsight, I would think that this girls dad wasn't quite ready to be a dad when he ordered this car...lol. Used to have a lot of town cruising around Eugene, OR in that monster, laying down stripe after stripe and making some Mustang and Z28 owners feel pretty bad :D
401 AMC Pacer - Yup, the Wayne's World mobile. This was my buddies car, I helped him shoehorn in the 401 from a Jeep truck. I actually sort of came to admire some of the design points on the Pacer after actually working on one (avoids rocks and bottles thrown his way). Like, the drivers door was longer than the passenger side door for easier loading. BTW, the Pacer was the first American made car that made ANY attempt at smart design and being fuel efficient. Too bad it was AMC behind it. Anyways, this car was too much fun. Driving around people would look at you and smirk if not out right laugh at you. Then the light would turn green, the Pacer would roar, and all you could see in your rear view mirror was tire smoke and whoever was next to you at the light, mouth agape.
75 Chevy LUV w/ 70 Chev 350 small block/TH400 trans. Another project. Best friend got a SWEETIE of a 70 Chev 1/2 ton truck for his 16th b-day from his grampa. It was his Grampa's truck, had about 63K original miles and had been painted once even though it didn't need it. Best looking year of the GM trucks too. 3 days after getting it, guy runs a 4-way stop and t-bones the truck, totals it. Take the insurance money and keep the truck, buy a clean little chevy LUV truck with a stepside bed (better to hide big tires under), transplant the small block and trans into the LUV, and let 'em rip. Actually the LUV takes a small block surprisingly well, the engine bay is a little short, but very wide. Custom 4 row radiator, a Moroso motor mount kit for said transplant, and an old Corvette grind cam and we were good to go. I thought the first time we romped on it the rear end would twist up like a pretzel, but it was surprisingly tough. This vehicle was NOT well sorted out, waaaay too much power to get to the ground. Plus it was geared very low, 4.53 (!). Doing 60 on the freeway and you sounded like a one man NASCAR race. It was tough to keep pointed straight when both rear tires were spinning most of the time; it was no biggie to be doing 40 mph and stand on it and haze the tires. In hindsight, since we used to rip around like Bo and Luke Duke, lucky we didn't kill ourselves or anybody else in that deathride...lol
71 Cadillac Coupe de Ville - Hard running 472 cubes of Detroit iron with a 150 hp nitrous plate system. I bought this car from my buddies father, a 400 lb. Baptist Minister. VERY clean car apart for the drivers side of the split bench being torn to crap. This was a 'Calais' edition, which must be French for 'stripped down'. No power seats, no vinyl top. Hmmm, factory light weight Caddy :D. Somebody had gotten a wild hair at some point and put dual exhaust on the car. I was really amazed at how well the car ran, it would power brake and spin the tires all day long. Slid a cheapie nitrous system in, and from there all hell broke loose. Oh yeah, found a set of Gabriel Hi-Jackers and had the rear end cranked way up in the air...LMAO. Hey, i was upscale white trash :) Caught many a pony-boy napping at the light. Was geared a little too tall (2.83's I think), but that did help it hook up, and roll on with the giggle gas was just insane. VERY much like the original Mad Max, things get blurry in a hurry :)
Anybody else got any personal experience with sleepers? :D
