to a car she now adores, an 89 900 turbo, Malachite Green on tan leather (automatic - I had to make that concession) It was a great deal (put $2000 in total to make the car "perfect")
I suggest a BMW 325ix. Likely under $10,000, and a somewhat stylish ride. It is not newer, but it is safer than the Laser/Talons/Eclipses. Subarus are not my cup of tea, though the occassional Impreza WRX will turn my head. Those are usually more than $10k. How much are the SVXs running these days? Cool car.
As far as reliable AND AWD you're not going to do better than the Eclipse. They can be made to go pretty damn fast with some easy bolt-ons, too. LOTS of people are tuning those cars.
