Well, about 2/3 of it. The Bushings will have to wait. More on this later

First I want to thank CKPaden for the kit. Love it. It does make a vast difference. There's a straight just before my neighborhood where I can really hit it. I usually would expect a little wiggle, but after driving home yesterday and today it is noticably neutral. A very good thing!

I also want to thank Viking Automotive. Eric and Jay are great guys, definitely Saab performance enthusiasts! Eric showed me his drag-car project engine: 2.1 liter with a turbo! Hooyeah!!

Okay, on to more important things, like what exactly is the VRK. The Viggen Rescue kit, which, by the way, is not exclusive to Viggens and will work with '94 to '97 900's and '98 on 9-3's, is a combination of stiffer suspension bushes, a brace bar, and a steering rack bracket and brace bar.

It works like this:
The steering rack on the NG900/9-3 is a notoriously poor design, obviously done to isolate the driver from the road, a' la Lexus, rather than put you in contact with the road, a'la M3. The rack is supported by two stamped steel U-clamps with a rubber bush between it and the steering rack. The U-clamps are bolted directly to the firewall, which, BTW, flexes under any kind of stress, such as agressive curves.

The right U-clamp is replaced by a two piece billet aluminum clamp. The steering rack is sandwiched between the two pieces. I addition, the upper mounting hole for the bolt is also the mounting hold for a brace bar which goes from the upper steering rack bolt to the right shock/strut tower/wheel well. This gives the whole steering rack a huge ammount of torsional stiffnes that just wasn't there before.

Next is a lower brace bar. While Saab had the right idea with an upper shock tower brace bar, they did nothing to the lower end of the suspension. Abbott rectifies this with a brace bar connecting the two sides of the sub-frame. This essentially completes a box surrounding the engine and tieing the two sides of the car together.

The next pieces are the bushes -- this I have not yet done. I also have Abbott springs yet to be put on. However Eric's spring compressor is missing a piece. We'll do this part later once his part comes in.

The connection between the lower link and the radius arm on the lower front suspension is another major faux pas with Saab's NG900/9-3. Again I suspect it was to isolate the cabin. In any case the connection is by an oil filled rubber doughnut which again flexes under any kind of stress. This is replaced by large polyurethane bushes, and the rear bushes on the radius arms are replaced by a bearing rather than a bush.

I can't wait to have these installed. This should really stiffen things up and make the car stick like glue to the road. I plan on having all this done with the springs in the next month or so.

Stay tuned for the next report :-)

Jim M.
