GM used to make 170 ton diesel electric mining haulers. There was one in Yugoslavia which had a brake mechanism hang up. So the brake shoes in the 4 ft diameter brake drum were generating lots of heat.

The wheel bolted up to the hub, close to the brake drum flange. The heat soaked into the wheel rim and caused the rubber compound to break down and release gasses. After a while the pressures and temperatures got so high that the air in the 10 foot dia tire dieseled and tore the wheel hub off of the axle. The driver who had been in various wars... thought that someone was shooting at his truck and in a reflex junmped from off the cab deck. That was a long way down and he broke both ankles. He was also reported to be deafened by the blast, but that may have passed.

So, there is a need to be concerned with brake heat getting into the wheel hub!
