I have the '88 brakes on my '86 SPG, and I've been through a bunch of stock and upgrade brake parts, using track days & driving schools to evaluate performance. Here are my current fav's:
- KVR Carbon Metallic pads
- Ate Slotted "powerdisc" rotors
- SS braided lines
- Motul 600 fluid
First off, the '88+ brakes are much better than the '85-'87 brakes, that is one reason I switched them, the other being so that I could run the 16" Aero wheels. I tried a set of X-drilled Brembo rotors with some Hawk pads in front, but after 4 months street use and one track day, the rotors were dead - scored and cracked between holes. I was ready to dump the Hawks anyway because they felt like crap (grinding feeling underfoot) and I couldn't take the incessant sqweaking and squawking anymore!
The SPG will run lap after lap with no/very little fade, and keep good modulation. At the braking limit however, the car can be squirrelly and unsettled, and the max braking force is less than what I have experienced in several Porsches I've been in. I attribute all this to size - the Saab has skinny 205 tires, smallish/narrow rotors, and smallish calipers. So the Saab system is not exactly "race ready" - but you can certainly improve its performance without going $$$ crazy. Damien
